Tapeworms are a common problem for cats and dogs. When your pet swallows a flea, parasites from that flea can turn into larvae and grow into intestinal tapeworms. Your pet probably has tapeworms if rice-like pellets are falling from its bottom. Here's how to get rid of tapeworms in your pet:

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Treat your pet for fleas. There's no point in curing the tapeworm problem, only to have your furry friend swallow another flea! Get rid of them first so the cycle doesn't continue. You should only need to cure tapeworms once.

  2. Step 2

Don't head to the vet just yet. You can get de-wormer at the grocery store, but most brands don't even affect tapeworms. You need something much stronger. Praziquantel can be used to treat tapeworms for under $20.

  3. Step 3

Give the directed amount of Praziquantel medicine to your pet. Hide the tablet in food or induce swallowing yourself. Look under the "resources" section lower on this page if you need to get medicine tablets right now.
