Camping is a wonderful outdoor activity all families should enjoy. There is nothing better than sitting around the campfire roasting marshmallows and spending time together. Camping can help families reconnect and get to know each other again while providing memories to last a lifetime. Pick a nice campsite, pack the sleeping bags and head into the woods!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Camping Supplies
  • Game
  • Time
  1. Step 1

Play games together. Card and board games are great ways to pass the time and allow families to reconnect while camping. Getting the best of each other during the game and having some laughs are great ways for families to have fun. Children remember fun times spent with their parents fondly when they get older. Make sure you are providing some memories!

  2. Step 2

Share information about what is going on in your life while sitting by the campfire. A campfire is relaxing and automatically lends itself to conversation. Use the time wisely and ask about your children’s day, school activities, friends and anything else that they wish to talk about. Learn what they enjoy and what makes them happy. Sharing is a two way street, so parents should talk about things important to them also. It helps children to know parents as individuals outside of just being mom and dad.

Teach children about fire safety and other useful outdoor activities while camping. A young child loves learning from his or her parents. Explain how to start and maintain a campfire safely, how to set up a tent, why it is important to protect the environment, and about keeping food out of reach of animals. A child will relish the one on one time and love telling his friends all about the neat things he learned to do while camping. This is a great way in which camping can help families reconnect and forge bonds.

Go for walks together. Camping doesn’t have to be all about talking. Families can reconnect during downtime also. Taking a walk in the cool forest air, listening to the birds chirp and watching the water lap in the lake is very relaxing and will allow children and parents to just feel good being in each other’s company. A little handholding is not uncalled for with younger children or between adults who relish a personal touch that has been missing.

  5. Step 5

Tell each other your dreams while lying under the stars at night on a camping trip. Peace and quiet offer wonderful opportunity for families to share their dreams with each other. You never know what you’ll find out about your children and each other when all the barriers are down and everyone is enjoying the night.

Tips & Warnings
  • Leave cell phones, computers and other electronics at home!
  • Always watch children around campfires. They may think they’ve learned more than they really have.
