Tennessee offers many options family rafting trips. The Pigeon River near Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge offers two main family rafting trips, the Upper Pigeon and the Lower Pigeon. The Upper Pigeon rafting trips feature class II to IV rapids, while the Lower Pigeon rafting trips feature lesser rapids. The Lower Pigeon family rafting trips allow kids as young as 4.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Select a whitewater rafting company on the Pigeon River that accommodates family rafting trips. Many possibilities exist in the Pigeon River area.

  2. Step 2

Check with the specific rafting company to determine the minimum ages and weight requirements for each family rafting trip on the Pigeon River. The Upper Pigeon River generally requires participants to be at least 8 years old or 70 pounds. The Lower Pigeon trips allow kids as young as 4.

  3. Step 3

Determine which whitewater rafting trip on the Pigeon River is best for your family. Consider the ages and weights of the kids, as well as the adventure level of the participants. Book the preferred rafting trip with the rafting company.

  4. Step 4

Dress for family rafting trips with attire suitable for wet conditions. You will get wet and may end up in the river so wear clothing that will be comfortable when wet. Shorts and tank tops or shirts are a good option. Don't forget the sunscreen.

  5. Step 5

Arrive at the predetermined time. Give yourself plenty of time so you don't miss the safety training. While no prior experience with whitewater rafting is necessary, the safety training is essential before family rafting trips. The training teaches you how to paddle and act in the raft. It also teaches you what to do should you fall out of the raft.

  6. Step 6

Enjoy the natural beauty and experience of the family rafting trip!
