Enjoy Your New Turntable
Enjoy Your New Turntable

On the fence about whether to buy a new or old turntable? With all the cheaply made products out there, it's no wonder many of us are now accustomed to associating old with quality and newer things as substandard.

Let me assure you, the new Crosley products are awesome. What's more they are capable of accommodating technologies never dreamed of in the old days of record players. The following steps are designed to make sure your experience with their products is an enjoyable one.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open the box carefully. Go along the sides and then slit upwards from the middle. Do not just stab into the box with your cutter, or you could mar the lovely wood veneer top.

  2. Step 2

Follow manufacturers directions. Save all parts. Remember to remove the plastic cover protecting the needle, and save it as well. This will be important if you wish to return it, or you find that it is not working properly.

  3. Step 3
I can finally play my Arthur Lyman record!

Set the dial to play records. Notice that they have thoughtfully included settings for 33 1/3, 45, and even the old 78 speed records. Once set to the proper speed, plop on an old record and gently grasp the needle arm. Pull it to the right, listen for the click that starts the turntable spinning and lower it onto your record to begin play.

  4. Step 4
A digital jukebox. Now I'm in trouble.

While listening to your record, look at the catalogs that come with your player for accessories, cleaners, replacement needles and other things you didn't know you needed. Remember that old or new, record players need a bit more love and attention than your mp3 player. Speaking of which, you'll find most of their products can accommodate mp3s and some can even convert music to different formats. Balance your checkbook and consider your credit rating before you do anything rash.

  5. Step 5
All ready for the next party.

Finally, allow yourself an indulgent moment or two. Lie on the carpet for a while and stare at the ceiling. Fall into a dream as you enjoy all your old records as if for the very first time.

Tips & Warnings
  • There's nothing wrong with purchasing a genuine old turntable, if the seller can assure it's in good working order. However, just like old cars it takes money to keep it that way, and locating needles and parts can be a pain.
  • Remember, you'll need to buy those little yellow plastic adapters for the older 45's.
