Dreaming is a major part of sleep. Would you like to be better able to remember what exactly you dream about? Lots of people wake up knowing that they were having vivid dreams, but just can't remember what they were. Perhaps you can remember some of your dreams, but would like to remember more. In fact, remembering dreams can be an exciting way to start off the day. Follow these steps to easily remember your dreams.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dream journal
  1. Step 1

Relax the muscles in your body, especially those in your jaw, as you fall asleep. This way you will be more relaxed and calm as you fall asleep, which will make your mind better able to focus.

  2. Step 2

Think about something pleasant. This could be a trip to the beach or a hike along a calm stream. The more you think about something as you fall asleep, the more likely you will be to dream about it during the night.

  3. Step 3

Stay still when you first wake up. Since you are making the transition from an unconscious to conscious state, your brain is preparing your body for movement. Staying still helps prolong that transition, making it easier to remember what your brain was telling you while you slept (i.e. your dreams).

  4. Step 4

Keep your eyes closed when you first wake up. Think hard and try to remember anything about the dreams you had through the night. Opening your eyes will start flooding your mind with visual information, which can cloud your ability to remember your dreams. It also shortens the transition between your sleep state and wake state.

  5. Step 5

Jot down all that you can remember about your dreams in a dream journal. Keep this journal beside your bed so that it is easily accessible. Remember that less movement is better.

  6. Step 6

Repeat these steps over the next few days or weeks. As your body and mind fall into this routine, you will find that it is easier to remember your dreams.

  7. Step 7

Tell your friends about your great dreams and make them feel jealous!

on 8/16/2009 Sigmund Freud put a lot of stock in dreams and others dismiss dreams as nothing more than hooey. Either way, the are entertaining and when they come true... wow! Keeping a journal by your bedside is excellent advice and I know this actually works rather well. Great article on easily remembering dreams. Your insight is beyond reproach. Thank you!
