Get Used To Wearing Dentures

It's not easy to get used to wearing dentures. You are afraid to smile, afraid to talk and afraid to eat certain foods because you know the dentures feel strange and out of place. You wonder what you look like to other people. There are a few things you can do to make the transition a little easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Practice in front of a mirror. Make faces, smile, frown, stick out your tongue, open your mouth wide and try to whistle. Do all of these while watching yourself in the mirror so you get an idea of what other people see. It will help to ease your self-consciousness.

    • 2

Record yourself talking. Start by reciting your ABC's or read out loud. You will hear if you need to practice your sounds a little more. Listen for any changes such as a lisp. Continue working on it until you sound like yourself again.

    • 3

Videotape yourself eating. Eat many different types of foods to see what you need practice with. This will also help you to find out which foods bother you. It's better to find out in the comfort of your own home rather than at a friend's house or in a restaurant.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may see and hear it's not nearly as bad as you thought.
