Storing this gear on a kayak, while keeping it accessible, is a challenge. To solve this problem build your own kayak fishing crate. The crate will give you two vertical rod holders and two 45-degree angled rod holders. The angled rod holders allow you to have two spread lines when trolling. he vertical rod holders are good for holding fishing rods or an anchor light when fishing at night. Many sit-on-top kayaks have bungee cord webbing that can be used to hold the fishing crate in place.

Things You'll Need

  • Milk crate
  • 1 1/2-inch diameter PVC pipe
  • PVC glue
  • Electrician's zip tie-wraps
  • Hand saw
  • 1/4-inch drill bit

Instructions

      Clean your milk crate.

      Stand the PVC pipe vertically at an inside corner of the crate. Mark the PVC at the height of the crate and cut two equal lengths.

      Drill two 1/4-inch diameter holes through the center of the PVC pipes 2 inches from each end. Use electrician's zip tie-wraps to secure each length of PVC to the inside corners of the crate.

      Mark the center line of the crate on the inner side and inner bottom. Cut a 45-degree angle on one of the remaining PVC pipes. Place the sharp end of the PVC pipe in the crate aligned with the center line marks. Mark the other end of the PVC pipe in line with the top of the crate. Cut the PVC pipe where it aligns with the top of the crate. Use the cut pipe as a pattern to make another one of equal length

      Drill two 1/4-inch diameter holes thru the center of the angled PVC pipes 2 inches from each end.

      Use PVC glue to secure the two pipe lengths at a 90-degree angle. Secure the glued PVC pipe into the crate using electrician's zip tie-wraps.
