How to Write Thoughtful Funeral Card Messages
If a friend or acquaintance or someone else close to you has lost someone, it is important to recognize that loss with a sympathy or funeral card. Even though it can be difficult to write cards of sympathy, it's important to show respect for the deceased person.

*Choose and Purchase a Sympathy or Funeral Card
If you wish, purchase a funeral card from the greeting card selection at a store or shop. However, keep in mind that many of these are written for people who are close to you. Finding a card for someone who is more of an acquaintance can be difficult. In these cases, choose a "thinking of you" or a blank card instead.

*Brainstorm Thoughtful Messages
Before sitting down to complete your card, brainstorm message ideas first. Don't write directly in the card--instead, write a few "rough drafts" on other pieces of paper first. These messages can be tricky, so give yourself a little time to work out the important details.
When thinking of ideas, remember that you should try to include a personal thought. Here are a few ideas you might use:
I know how much [person's name] meant to you, so I'm sending this card with deepest sympathy.
Please know that I'm thinking of you in this difficult time and I hope that you find peace in the days to come.
We're thinking of you.
[name] was one of the most amazing people I knew, so I know this loss was hard.
Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.
We wish you well in this tough time; hang in there.
Your [aunt] meant a great deal to a lot of people; she will be missed.
Your [aunt] will remain in our thoughts forever.

*Complete your Funeral Card
Finish your funeral card by delivering it in person or mailing it to the recipient's address. Do not send e-cards for funerals; this is an occasion when you should take the extra time to use snail mail.
