Transplant Lucky Bamboo Plants

The Lucky Bamboo plant (Dracaena sanderiana) is used in Feng Shui to bring balance into the home regarding happiness, wealth or health. In addition to being "lucky," they are easy to care for, can live in low light and require little maintenance. However, eventually you may be faced with the task of transplanting your lucky bamboo plant.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Container
  • Sand, Loose Soil or Pebbles
  • Water
  1. Step 1

Examine the container and check if roots are growing out from the top of the container or the bottom. Transplant your lucky bamboo only if you see roots flowing out of the container, since they prefer tight spaces.

  2. Step 2

Choose a new container or pot that is 2 inches larger than the original.

  3. Step 3

Decide if you are going to transplant your lucky bamboo into sand, loose soil, water or pebbles.

  4. Step 4

Carefully drain the water from the pot if it is planted in pebbles by gently holding the main stalks and tipping the container.

  5. Step 5

Fill the new container or pot 1/4 of the way with sand, loose soil or pebbles.

  6. Step 6

Remove the bamboo from the original container by tipping it and holding the main stalks. If planted in pebbles, gently pull the plant to remove it and avoid damaging the roots. If planted in sand or soil tip the container almost completely over and remove gently.

  7. Step 7

Place the bamboo in the new container. Gently add new sand, loose soil or pebbles until the container is filled minus 1/2 inch from the top.

  8. Step 8

If transplanting into water, remove the plant from its original container. Remove pebbles, sand or loose soil that will fall easily and place in the fresh water.

  9. Step 9

Add water to pebbles or water lightly if transplanted into loose sand or soil. Move carefully to the desired location and enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not transplant lucky bamboo into a large container. They prefer smaller and tight spaces, and too large of a container could kill the plant.
  • Water your plant using distilled or bottled water. Tap water contains chemicals that are harmful to the bamboo plant.
  • Lucky bamboo is mildy toxic and plants should be placed out of the reach of small children and pets.
