Today, most hunting rifles have some type of rifle scope. This allows hunters with less than perfect sight the ability to focus for a clear, clean shot at the target.

  2. Step 2

The average deer hunter uses a 3-9x40 rifle scope, because the 3x power is low enough for light transmisson and wide enough field of view to still make those close shots, while the 9xpower gives you the magnification for longer shots. You also want multicoated lenses, they reduce glare and loss of light due to reflections.

  3. Step 3

Turkey hunting with a rifle scope mounted to your shotgun or muzzleloader are a different breed. You often have short range shots, low power such as a fixed 2x or 2-7 power are fairly standard, maybe even a 3-9x on your muzzleloader. 2xpower means 2 times normal vision,3x means 3 times and so on.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you've selected a scope be sure it's properly mounted as low as comfortable and secured. Then boresight your scope before trying to sight your rifle in,this will allow you to properly sight in your rifle.
