Many oils are safe to use on the skin undiluted, but you need to be sure you have pure therapeutic grade oils. Most store bought oils, even those from most health stores are not pure oils, they have been altered chemically and have no therapeutic benefits, as their main purpose is to be used as a perfume.

  2. Step 2

Lavender is a wonderful oils that can be applied directly to the skin. It has a number of uses but it generally know for calming and balancing the body. Lavender can also be used topically on children, although you need to be certain you are using pure lavender. If you want to use other essential oils on children, make sure you dilute them with a carrier oil.

  3. Step 3

The best place to apply oils is the soles of the feet, this will also allow your body to get used to the oil and reduce the possibility of a reaction. If you are going to use an oil topically then always do a skin test first, if the skin goes red then dilute the oil in a carrier oil such as olive or grapeseed oil. Remember that if you are using oils for the first time it is a good idea to only use one or two single oils or blends at a time.

  4. Step 4

Here are a few oils and their topical uses:
Frankincense can be used to reduce scarring or stretch marks, to reduce the itching of a bug bite, 1 or 2 drops can be rubbed onto the face to help reduce sun damage and dry skin.
Peppermint can be rubbed on the temples or sinuses (avoid the eyes) to help relieve head pressure or apply to the neck or shoulders to help boost energy levels
Lemon oil can be used on spots or cold sores. It can also be rubbed daily on corns and bunions to help provide relief. Massaging lemon oil on cellulite can also help with circulation. You must not use lemon oil if you are going to out in direct sunlight within 12 hours.
