How to Remove Mildew from Vinyl Shower Curtains

Vinyl is naturally mildew resistant, because it contains no nutrients on which mold spores can feed. If enough dirt and moisture collect, however, mildew may still begin to grow, because molds can feed on soil. If you notice mildew growing on your vinyl shower curtain, you should remove it before the problem has the chance to spread to other parts of your bathroom. If left untreated, the growth may also make you sick, especially if you have mold allergies or any respiratory sensitivities. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your laundry washing machine and add 1/2 cup of bleach to the bleach dispenser. The bleach dispenser is typically triangular in shape and appears near the front of the machine. Additionally, add 1/4 cup of your regular laundry detergent to the wash.

    • 2

Select the "Delicate" setting on your washer and let the water run for about two minutes. This will allow enough time to properly dilute the bleach and detergent before you submerge the vinyl shower curtain.

    • 3

Place the vinyl shower curtain inside the washing machine. Add a couple of towels to the wash as well. This will protect the curtain and prevent it from crinkling.

    • 4

Remove the shower curtain when the wash concludes, and insert it into a dryer along with the towels. Dry the curtain for only ten minutes and then place it outside to air dry. When the curtain dries completely, return it to its original location in the bathroom.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you prefer a natural alternative to bleach, Apartment Therapy recommends placing your vinyl shower curtain in the wash and pouring a cup of baking soda or vinegar into the machine (along with detergent). Though recommended as a general cleaning solution, this method should effectively clean mildew as well, because sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and acetic acid (vinegar) both contain powerful mildew-fighting properties.

  • If you notice mildew growing on your shower curtain, make sure to carefully inspect the rest of your bathroom as well. In some cases, the appearance of mildew on any surface can indicate a larger mold problem.
