Step 1
Attend all parent information nights at the beginning of the school year. This gives you insight as to what the school and class expectations are for the year. This also lets your child (children) know that you are interested in their education. Many schools have events at the beginning of the year, plan to attend so you can get a feeling of the school climate.

Step 2
Make contact with your child's teacher. Inquire about volunteer jobs that may be available both in class and at home. If your work schedule allows, try to volunteer one day a month in the classroom. For example, plan for the first Monday of each month or ask your child's teacher if there is a specific time that they might need some extra help, maybe a holiday celebration. Plan in advance for special events around holidays or field trips.

Step 3
If your work schedule does not allow a regular once a month visit to the classroom inquire about jobs that can be done at home. Depending on the ages of your children there may be some prep work for upcoming projects or correcting of papers that can be done at home. Some teacher put parents in charge of book orders or assembling of memory books for children. Each teacher is different and may have many more jobs that can be completed at home. Regardless if these jobs are completed at home or in the classroom you will feel like you are participating in your child's class.

Step 4
There are also many jobs available within the school. Look into being part of the PTA or Site Council. These groups typically meet once a month after school hours so it may work with your work schedule. Working on an event for the PTA might only consume your time for a short period of time allowing you to feel connected to the school. You may also be able to sign up to volunteer at various family events that occur at night or on weekends.
