A camping trip usually isn't complete without a night of making s'mores around the fire. They're sweet, gooey, warm, and delicious. However, let's face it - they have no nutritional value. This article tells you how to make banana boats - a sweet, gooey, warm, and delicious alternative that adds potassium and antioxidants. They're more fun to make and kids will love them just as much!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bananas
  • Marshmallows
  • Dark chocolate chips
  • A spoon
  • Aluminum foil
  • Campfire basket (often used for cooking corn on the cob)
  1. Step 1

    Peel and Hollow:

Peel back one section, approximately 1/2" to 1" wide without completely removing that part the banana peel. Then take a spoon scoop out that section of the banana, creating the shape of a boat. Eat or dispose of the scooped banana.

  2. Step 2

    Fill the Boat:

Fill the hollow section of the banana with marshmallows and dark chocolate chips. Prevent the contents from spilling by recovering the section with the banana peel.

  3. Step 3

    Wrap and Cook:

Wrap the banana boat in aluminum foil and place in a campfire cooking basket (commonly used to cook corn over the fire). Heat over the fire for 2-5 minutes or until the chocolate and marshmallows have melted.

  4. Step 4

    Eat and Enjoy:

Let stand for 1 minute to cool and the carefully unwrap the foil. Peel back the open section of the boat. Eat with a spoon.

Tips & Warnings
  • Larger, wider bananas work best.
  • For smaller appetites, the banana boat can be shared by cutting the finished product in half horizontally.
  • Depending on the strength of the campfire, the banana boat can take a longer or shorter amount of time to cook.
