If you were taught how to spool knit, also known as french knitting, then you'll want to resurrect your crochet hook and give it a whirl. Spool knitters are easy to make; it's finding what you need to make them that can be difficult. Get going on your quest to make a knitting spool.

Instructions

Find a spool. The first thing you need for a spool knitter is a wooden spool. These can be hard to come by. Look for a box of old spools at a flea market, Goodwill or a garage sale. If you don't find a used spool, go to a craft store and look for decorative wooden spools. Don't buy a tiny one; these are often used to string together for a doll necklace. Instead, find a spool that is about the same size as a regular plastic spool of thread.

Choose and use nails. You need four "penny nails" or tacks for your spool knitter. The nails should not have much of a crown on them. Great nails to use for this can be found in a picture hanging kit. Gently tap the nails into the spool, leaving them about 1/4 inch above the spool. Nail them into a square around the hole of the spool.
