Biscuits are available in cans at the grocery store, but rarely do they measure up to the homemade version you can make from scratch. The fluffy bread concoction finishes off a hearty breakfast that's good for making breakfast sandwiches or as a base to cover with gravy. Biscuits are easy to make, but take a little time. Things You'll Need

  • 2-1/4 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Mixing bowl
  • Rolling pin
  • Baking pan or cast iron skillet

Instructions

      Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

      Add 2 cups of self-rising flour, 1 tsp. baking powder, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup of shortening and 1 cup buttermilk in mixing bowl.

      Also add 1/4 cup of flour on cutting board.

      Use spoon to mix the ingredients. Knead the dough by hand on a cutting board or a clean counter top with a sprinkle of flour.

      Use a rolling pin or a plain tin can without the wrapper to roll out the dough approximately 1/2 inch thick.

      Grease your skillet or baking pan with shortening.

      Use the tin can or biscuit cutter to stamp out the biscuits. You should have approximately 7-10 biscuits, depending on the size of the cutter.

      Place stamped out biscuits in skillet or baking pan.

      Place the skillet in the heated oven for approximately 15-20 minutes. Wait for biscuits to brown on top.

      Turn oven to "broil" when biscuits start to brown on top. After you turn the oven to "broil," leave biscuits in oven 2-3 minutes for them to completely brown.

      Remove biscuits from oven. Allow to cool for a few minutes.
