Funnel Cakes - Yumm! You don't have to wait for the carnival or fair to eat this wonderful fried, powdered sugar-covered confection. They are easy to make at home in your own kitchen.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pancake mix
  • Deep fat frier
  • powdered sugar
  • funnel or spout-topped bottle
  1. Step 1

Set up your deep-fat fryer. If you don't have one you can use a deep skillet. Vegetable oil works best. Heat your oil to between 300 and 350 degrees.

  2. Step 2

While your oil is warming mix your pancake mix according to the directions on the box. You may want to add a little more sugar than the recipe calls for, but not too much. You want the batter to be a little on the thin side.

  3. Step 3

Put the batter in a container that is easy to pour from, like a bottle or pitcher. If you have a sport bottle of the sort that has a spout rather than a straw you can use that and you won't need a funnel. The diameter of your spout should be about 1/2 an inch.

  4. Step 4

Once your oil is hot enough, begin by pouring a stream of batter through your funnel into the oil. You want to loop the batter around back and forth, crisscrossing the top of the fryer or skillet until you have a disk of tangled batter. Let it fry until it is golden brown, flipping it once to make sure it's done on both sides.

  5. Step 5

Use tongs to remove your finished funnel cake from the oil. Place it on a paper towel to blot up any excess oil. Serve it on a paper plate and sprinkle it heavily with powdered sugar.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also top your funnel cake with a mix of sugar and cinnamon, or a drizzle of chocolate syrup, or even your favorite jam.
  • Make them as big or as small as you like - they don't have to be the monster size you get at the fair.
  • You can buy actual funnel cake mix at Sam's Club, but it's expensive and only comes in a bulk size. Pancake batter is pretty much the same stuff. It's just a little less sweet.
  • Be very careful working with hot oil.
