Hostas are shade-loving plants that grow in a range of climates. They are lovely in a shade garden where not many other things will grow. Hostas are simple to care for, but they do like a bit of pruning in the fall. If you care for your hosta properly, it should give you many years of enjoyment.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Deadhead the flowers, if desired, as they fade. You may cut the flower stalks down to foliage levels at all times of the year.

  2. Step 2

Prune only in the fall, after frost has taken the plant out. Use the shears to bring the plant down to within 6 inches of ground level.

  3. Step 3

In the spring, protect new growth from late frosts with mulch if needed. New growth does not like freezing temperatures, but the dormant plant is cold hardy.
