How to Highlight Hair at Home Without a Kit

Highlights can brighten dull hair color or create a drastic change to a person's hairstyle. Hair highlighting kits can make changing your hair color an easy process. Highlighting your hair on your own, though, gives you the option of choosing the exact placement of the highlights. This can be a tedious task to do for yourself or for a friend. Skilled hair coloring professionals, however, will charge you up to $100 (or more) for highlights.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair color
  • Hair color activator
  • Latex gloves
  • Hair color bowl
  • Hair color brush
  • Metal tail comb
  • 3 inch by 8 inch sheets of aluminum foil
  1. Step 1

Choose the hair color that you would like to highlight your hair. You should purchase this and the hair color activator from a beauty supply store in order to get the results that you would like. If your hair is already dyed, you may need to use hair bleach and toner to add the highlights. Color alone should only be used on hair that is a undyed, natural hair color.

  2. Step 2

Put on your latex gloves as the hair color activator can damage your skin.

  3. Step 3

Mix equal parts of hair color and activator in the bowl with the brush.

  4. Step 4

Use your tail comb to separate transparent sections of hair.

  5. Step 5

Slide the aluminum foil under the sections so that the foil touches the roots of your hair.

  6. Step 6

Stand or sit in front of a mirror and use the hair color brush to paint the mixture onto the hair that is laying on top of the foil. Be sure to saturate the hair from root to tip.

  7. Step 7

Fold the foil in half lengthwise so that it closes around the hair. Fold again and turn the sides of the foil in so that the hair is completely sealed.

  8. Step 8

Continue to create foil packets around the head. Add foils on top of one another for more noticeable highlights and leave more hair in between each foil packet for a more natural look.

  9. Step 9

Allow the hair color to develop for about 30 minutes after you've completed your last foil packet.

  10. Step 10

Remove the foils. Shampoo and condition the hair.
