Things You'll Need:
- A small foot stool
- Patience
- Dog food for senior dogs.
- A trusted veterinarian
-
Step 1
If you have a senior dog, take your dog for regular visits to the veterinarian. As your dog ages, situations may occur that would go undetected by the average person.
-
Step 2
Talk to the dog's veterinarian about possible food changes. Some dogs gain weight as they age, and slow down physically. Dog food made to help older overweight dogs are available. Be sure you purchase the best you can afford.
-
Step 3
Purchase a small stool to help your senior dog get into it's favorite chair. If your dog doesn't seem to be able to jump into his usual spot with the same enthusiasm as it once did, a stool may help.
-
Step 4
Before your dog is a senior dog, consider purchasing pet insurance. Pet insurance may help you financially if you can't afford the expense of medical attention and prescriptions your older dog needs.
-
Step 5
Take your senior dog to have it's teeth cleaned several times each year. As a dog ages and becomes inactive, you may notice it needs more dental care.
-
Step 6
Senior dogs often need medications, which should be purchased through your veterinarian, or an online pet specialty store. If you purchase these elsewhere, you may not be getting what Fido needs.

on 8/14/2009 Awesome advice Pet health insurance is a must. I have petfirst and when Jasper had pancreatitis and required a 3 day stay the bill was $1237.00 the insurance paid just over $1100.00 of the bill!
