One of my favorite side dishes is sweet and sour red cabbage. Its an excellent side dish for many meals. Below please find my recipe for making a very tasty sweet and sour red cabbage.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Ingredients for Sweet and sour Red Cabbage:

    2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
    1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
    1/2- 1 apple, peeled, cored, chopped
    4 cups of thinly sliced red cabbage
    1/4 cup of a good quality apple cider vinegar
    1/4 cup sugar
    1/2 teaspoon of celery seed
    ½ teaspoon of nutmeg
    1/4 cup of diced bacon
    salt and pepper to taste

  2. Step 2

    Heat oil in a heavy large saucepan over med-high heat.

  3. Step 3

    Add red onion and apple and sauté until golden. This should take about 7 minutes.

  4. Step 4

    Add cabbage and vinegar, sugar and celery seed, nutmeg and cook until the cabbage is crisp-tender and liquid is reduced to a glaze. This should take about 10 minutes. Mix in bacon, season with salt and pepper and serve right away.
