If you have ever shaved you have probably been a victim of razor burn. Razor burn is actually caused by the irritation of the razor on your skin and the germs that get into that irritated area. The worst thing you can do when you have razor burn it to touch or pick at it. The ideal solution to razor burn is to never get it and razor burn can be avoided if you follow the tips below.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Razor
  • electric razor
  • trimmer
  • shaving gel
  • towel
  • warm water
  • after shave
  • neosporin
  1. Step 1

If your skin is prone to razor burn you should limit the amount of times you actually shave your hair. Allow you skin time to heal between shavings, usually three days is long enough. Make sure you are using fresh blades each time you shave also. This is important so you don’t aggravate your already irritated skin. Using electric trimmers and shavers are better also because they require less pressure to get a smooth shave therefore creating less damage to your skin.

For women shaving their bikini area make sure you use a new razor each time you shave this very sensitive area. Make sure you start with the bikini area; this will be when your razor is the sharpest. Once you’re done with the bikini area you go to the legs and underarm.

  2. Step 2

For an even shave you should place a warm towel over the area you plan to shave for about five minutes. This will allow your pores to open up and you skin will soften.

For women shaving their bikini area a warm shower is suggested to full open the pores and allow an even shave. This will soften the hair and make it much easier to shave.

  3. Step 3

Use after shave. Many after shaves will contact some form of razor bump prevention or alcohol. This will help removed any germs on your skin and allow it to heal. The most important thing to do at this point is leave it alone. If you keep touching the irritated skin it will only make it worse and extend the healing time. If you apply a good over the counter product to prevent razor burn and leave it alone it will heal. If you continue to mess with it and aggravate it, it will become infected and very sore.

For women you should apply shaving gel to the bikini area several minutes prior to shaving. Once you are done you should apply an after shave with lidocaine to help prevent razor burn. Allow the skin to breath a little after you shave by wearing loose fitting clothes.

  4. Step 4

If you are not able to prevent razor burn you should apply Neosporin to the infected skin to speed up the healing process.
