Place a Bet at a RaceTrack

Learn about the easy steps of betting on horses at a racetrack. Use these tips to get ready for The Kentucky Derby or year-around horse betting.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

When you arrive, find the betting window and get in line. When it's your turn state to the clerk the name of the racetrack you are playing. You will know the name of the racetrack from the program you receive upon entering the stadium.

  2. Step 2

Next, tell the clerk the dollar amount you are requesting to bet. Most places allow you to bet a minimum of ten cents upwards to a max of anything your budget allows! The more you bet, the more you will win if your horse does win the race.

  3. Step 3

The third step is to state the type of bet you wish to make. You can choose from win, place, show, exacta, trifecta, etc. SHOW means that the horse must finish 1st, 2nd, or 3rd and you win. PLACE, your horse must finish 1st or 2nd for you to win, WIN, your horse must finish first to win.
Always refer to your race program you receive at the door to explain the types of bets you can place. They will give you greater detail.

  4. Step 4

Lastly, tell the clerk the PROGRAM number of the horse you are betting on. There is no need to ever mention the name of the horse you choose, they all have numbers attached to them that will make your horse easier to identify. Now, you are ready to sit back and relax and route on your horse! Good luck.
