A very effective fire starter you can make at home to pack in your survival kit. Light weight and works great.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Vaseline
  • Cotton Balls
  • Light Weight Tight Container
  1. Step 1

The idea is to make a self contained wick that will burn for a long time that you can carry in your survival kit. A wick that you place in your kindling to start the fire.

  2. Step 2

I suggest that you have your container opened and ready to place your fire starters in as you make them. The container does not have to be totally water proof (tight will do) as you will ascertain as I explain how to make the starters.

  3. Step 3

Your fire starter will be a cotton ball. How many you carry will depend on personal preference. One cotton ball will usually suffice per each fire built.

  4. Step 4

The idea is to take Vaseline and totally cover the outside of the cotton ball. When you have the cotton ball totally covered with the Vaseline you can place it in the container. The cotton ball will serve as a wick and the Vaseline will be the fuel source. You will be amazed at how long the Vaseline will burn before the fire actually burnes through to the cotton. Simply place one of these balls under your starter kindling and light it. Because you are using petroleum jelly it in itself is resistant to dampness.

Tips & Warnings
  • It wouldn't hurt to place a few stick matches in your container as well. This is a light weight fire starting kit that every survival kit should have in it. I outlined using Vaseline but any petroleum jelly can be used.
