You want to give voice over work a try but you have no idea where to start. Here are some tips to get you headed in the right direction.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • internet
  • microphone
  • books w/ characters
  • email address
  1. Step 1

Get your voice recorded. For samples on different ways to show and record your voice go to a site like you tube and look up different character ideas like rude customer, or uptight neighbor to get a few examples.

  2. Step 2

You may want to write down the lines you hear to help you as you do your recording. Note the expression and tones in your voice when you write the words.

  3. Step 3

Another idea is to get books and write down the lines the characters use. Again, note the expression in their tone. Use children's books, teenage, the book does not matter as much as having characters you can record potential lines from to demonstrate your voice ability.

  4. Step 4

Once you have a couple character voices recorded go to a site like craigslist. And while the next step may seem a bit daunting, it could be your foot in the door.

  5. Step 5

Go through major recording areas like California and New York to start. Look under gigs and then type in voice overs. Any audition work should be listed when you type that up.

  6. Step 6

When you find a gig you want to try out for, email a file of your recorded voice, and a little info about yourself like whether you have done voice work before or any other plays or acting experience you may have.

  7. Step 7

Make sure you leave a way to contact you like the email address you check regularly.

  8. Step 8

Good luck on landing that first voice over and have fun with it! The best work from home work ever.

Tips & Warnings
  • As always, be careful when you look for work on craigslist

on 10/25/2009 Interesting article for getting an audition for voice over work. I practiced by reading to books to my kids. Now I sing while I'm driving (with the windows up) but during rush hour this can turn into screaming LOL. Thank you.
