Step 1
Be honest. The whole point of an admission essay is for us, the college admission counselors, to get to know who you are. We want to be able to put a personality with the transcript and SAT scores in front of us. Let us know who you are. If the topic is to write about someone who has influenced your life - paint a picture - let me know who that person is and what they have done for you. At some schools, you can't do an interview. For those schools, this essay is your chance to give them a snapshot of who you are and what you can bring to the college.

Step 2
Be creative. There are only so many essays someone can read about how great their grandma is before they all start blending together. If you are creative with how you present your grandma, the admissions counselor will remember it forever. When I read a great essay, I'll bring it into my co-workers office and share it with them. Those essays are the ones you will remember. It can be about anything - your grandma, dog or kindergarten nap time - but whatever it is about, make sure you put your own spin on it.

Step 3
Be grammatically correct! When referring to yourself in a college admission essay, the word "I" should be capitalized. Never "i." Proofread what you write. Have someone else proofread it (not write it - just proofread it). And if you are going to refer to a college in an admission essay, make sure it is the college you are sending the essay to.
