How to Help an Adult Choking

This article will help you rescue someone who is choking, whether if they are sitting or standing. Remember choking is life threatening.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    First, ask the person if they are OK. The person will usually shake their head or put their hands in front of thier neck (this is the universal sign for choking).

  2. Step 2

    Secondly, ask the person if you can help them. (steps 1 and 2 go really quick).

  3. Step 3

    3. Stand behind the person choking and
    put arms around their waist.

  4. Step 4

    4. Put your fist on their abdomen(belly) (with the thumb side facing in)between the navel and ribcage.

  5. Step 5

    5. With your other hand grab the fist.

  6. Step 6

    6. Press your fist with pressure in and upward quickly (like a scooping motion).

  7. Step 7

    7. Continue this motion (thrusting) until the foreign object comes out or the person can not respond.

    If the person becomes unresponsive, yell for 911. Then attempt CPR until help arrives.
