How to Upgrade Old Draperies

1
Using your old draperies, cut off 1 or 2 feet from the bottom. This will be the base of your new drapery. Measure the length. Go to a local drapery or fabric store and purchase a solid, neutral tone drapery that will match your old drapery. The solid color will balance the busy tones of your old drapery. This can be of any material as long as it is not too heavy. Make sure the length is exactly the same as your old drapery.
-
2
Cut the new solid drapery so that it is hanging 1 or 2 feet from the ground (depending on how much of the old draperies you want as the base).
-
-
3
Lay your old drapery face down on top of your new solid drapery. Sew the two fabrics together so that the unfinished ends are on the back. This will create a finished look in the front. Remember to use light fabric because heavier materials will make it look bulky and will affect the way the drapery hangs. You can also sew on 1-inch seams to connect the two fabrics.
-
4
Purchase contemporary rods that fit the décor of your home. This will make an immense affect on the overall look of the draperies.

Good thinking on the weight of the draperies. Doubling up the fabric gives it enough weight without being bulky and it also gives you the opportunity to do color accenting with the bottom layer. Great!
