Perhaps the most annoying thing in the world is a telemarketing call, just when you sit down to dinner. Nearly as bothersome is a mailbox full of junk mail, not spam, junk mail—the stuff that comes by snail mail and fills your mailbox and your trashcan. Because the junk mail senders have caught on to your practice of throwing their advertising away without opening it, many of them now resort to camouflaging the trash to look like legitimate mail. It’s annoying. And it’s time to stop the practice.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sign up on the National Do Not Call Registry to block the telemarketing calls. You’ve probably heard of this list, you may even have signed up once but now they’re calling again. Be aware that you can only add your cell phone numbers and your home numbers. Business phone numbers are not protected. In addition, any businesses you contacted within the past 18 months are exempt. Call (888) 567-8688 now and put an end to annoying telemarketing calls.

  2. Step 2

When was the last time you got one of those, “You’re pre-approved for a spiffy credit card,” offers in your mailbox? Yesterday? Unlike the National Do Not Call Registry, it takes a bit more work to stop all of the junk mail. For credit card offers, go to www.optoutprescreen.com and register.

  3. Step 3

If bulky trade magazines and catalogs are loading up your box, go to www.dmachoice.org and sign up to be removed from all their mailing lists.

  4. Step 4

Consider registering at www.papesgoesgreen.org to get rid of extra phone books and other state and local mailings.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask the telemarketer for the name of her company and a contact phone number if you are called after registering on the Do Not Call List. Request that the telemarketing calls cease and inform any caller that you are already registered. If you receive another call – place your own call to your Attorney General.
