Step 1
Check your tire pressure regularly. You can purchase a tire pressure gage at any auto parts store or any department store like Walmart. The correct tire pressure should be printed along the side of the tire. Check this at least once a month.
-
Step 2
Use a bottle of fuel injector cleaner with every fill-up or at least once a month to keep your feel filter and fuel injector clean and running better.
-
Step 3
Perform all scheduled maintenance your vehicle requires. If your engine is running poorly, it can rob your vehicle of performance and decrease your mileage.
-
Step 4
Slow down! Every MPH over 60 that you go decrease your fuel efficiency. And really is the 5 minute you get somewhere really going to make a difference.
-
Step 5
Change your driving habits. When sitting at a red light do not "put the pedal to the metal" as soon as the light changes. Not only is this bad for your tires and suspension but it will waste fuel. As a general rule try not to let your car go past 3,000 rpm.
-
Step 6
If you are going to be waiting somewhere with the car running for more than 60 seconds shut off the engine. The act of starting your car uses almost as much gas as letting it run for 60 seconds so if you will be there for just a minute, let it run.
-
Step 7
Turn off the air conditioning. Running the AC can also decrease your fuel efficiency. We have become so accustomed to using air conditioning that most of the time we have it on when we aren't even that hot. Just roll down the windows and let the wind cool you off.
-
Step 8
I hope these tips can save you a little bit of money at the gas pumps, we can all certainly use a few extra dollars.
