Step 1
Pack less. Pick your carry-on eligible suitcase and if what you want to bring doesn't fit - start over. Some thoughts here to help include: Can you do wash at your destination? Do you need five shirts for a three day trip? Bring two pair of shoes only, wear one and pack the other. Bring shirts and pants that you mix and match so you can wear them a couple times but not look like you're wearing the same thing.

Step 2
Fly a fee-free airline. At the time this article is being written two major airlines exist like this - JetBlue and Southwest Airlines. The better news is that both of these airlines are considered low-fare carriers so if they serve your market and destination, most fares you find on them should be very competitive.
-
Step 3
Get a waiver! Ahhhhh, the power of asking. One never knows what will happen until you ask. Inquire with the airline agent when you're checking your luggage if they can waive the fee; or one of the fees if checking multiple bags. Frequent fliers should really ask for a waiver - think about how loyal you are to them. Shouldn't they return the favor. Other waivers that should happen automatically but you may have to remind the airline are first class travelers, unaccompanied minors, and military.
-
Step 4
Get somebody else to pay. Hotels are desperate for business and it is not unreasonable to ask them to discount your stay to offset the extra cost you will incur to check bags on your flight. Desperate times call for desperate measures - and many hotels are willing to charge less per night to get your business, especially if you are staying for a longer period of time (3+ days) or are a frequent visitor.

Step 5
Ship it!!! This option is becoming more popular every day and the cost does depend upon the weight of the suitcase. But the convincing is unparallel and for the average size suitcase the cost should be about what an airline charges. Call the carrier (i.e. UPS, FED-EX, etc.) and they'll come right to your door and pick it up. Then it will be waiting for you at your destination when you arrive. You'll have to do the same on your return but the fact that you don't have to carry it does make this an attractive option. You can save additional money here too if you have it shipped early as a non-priority delivery.
