An emoticon is defined as a sideways facial glyph used in e-mail or Chat to indicate an emotion or attitude, as to indicate intended humor. It also portrays a writer's mood and/or facial expression. Emoticons can change and improve interpretation of plain text. Sometimes we can type something in a text or email that may be interpreted the wrong way so we can add an emoticon to portray a special feeling that we are serious or we may be kidding around about a statement that we typed.
