How to Open a Candle Shop

Opening a candle shop is not difficult if you do your research. You need start up money to make it a successful business untill your business takes off. You will not make money to live on the first year or so. It may take years. It's best if you have a regular salary until your candle shop takes off. Depending on the area you are in, it could happened sooner for some than others. This will become a lot of work once you get busy and you may want to hire someone. Having a family member to help you will save you on having payroll.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Purchase or rent a building in a good location.

  2. Step 2

    Apply for a DBA name(doing business as) at your local county clerk's office which is usually located in the court house.

  3. Step 3

    Open a business checking account.

  4. Step 4

    Call to get service for the electric and telephone.

  5. Step 5

    Apply for a certificate of authority at www.opal.org Click on starting a new business and it will take you step by step of what you need to do.

  6. Step 6

    Apply for an EIN at www.opal.org if you plan on hiring employees.

  7. Step 7

    After you get your certificate of authority, call your local code enforcer to get an inspection for a certificate of occupancy.

  8. Step 8

    While your waiting for your certificate of authority, purchase your products you plan on making and selling.

  9. Step 9

    When you receive your certificate of authority and your certificate of occupancy you will be ready to open your candle shop.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have a big enough home, a home business might be better in the beginning, as it is costly in the beginning.
  • After you get the building where you will be doing business, make sure you get your DBA before you do anything else, as you will need it to apply for everything
  • You can not open your business to the public until you receive your certificate of authority and certificate of occupancy
  • If you are doing business as a Sole Proprietor and you are not having any employees, then you do not need an EIN
  • Make sure you know how to make your products before you open your business. The more products you learn to make, the more sales you will have
  • Before choosing a DBA name, make sure it is the one you want. Don't hurry up to the county clerk's office on an impulse. You may regret it later. If you ever decide to change your DBA name, change it by making an amendment on the one you already have, do not just go up and get another DBA.. This will mess everything up for you
