Clean and deodorize your garbage disposal the natural green way, without spending money on costly grocery store products.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Teakettle
  • Rinds of citrus fruit
  1. Step 1

There is no way around it. Your garbage disposal is always getting greasy and smelly with daily use. Here's how to keep it clean and grease free the natural way. You will be saving money by not having to buy costly cleaning products and helping the environment by not adding more chemicals into the water supply!
The first thing to do is to fill the teakettle with water and bring it to a boil.

  2. Step 2

When the water in the teakettle is boiling, pour the entire contents of the teakettle down the kitchen drain. This will eliminate all of the grease and garbage remnants in the disposal. If you do this weekly, there will be no greasy buildup in your disposal.

  3. Step 3

After all the grease is removed, it is time to freshen and deodorize. Any of the citrus rinds-orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit-is good for this purpose. In fact, you will notice that many of the commercial cleaning and polishing products on the market use these exact items in their products! Simply add small portions of any of these citrus rinds to your disposal, run the water and flip on the disposal for about 20 seconds. Now you're done! And your garbage disposal is clean, free of grease and smells delightful.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always cut the citrus rinds into smaller pieces before adding to the disposal to avoid overstraining of the disposal mechanism. Cut lemons or limes in quarters, oranges and grapefruits into eighths. And having eaten the fruits before adding the rinds to the disposal, you have enhanced your own health. It's a win-win!
