How to Refinish a Wood Front Door to Save Money

Refinish a wood front door to make it new again.

You can give a wood front door a whole new appearance by refinishing it. Instead of paying an expensive carpenter labor and supplies, save money and refinish a wood front door yourself. This DIY project to refinish a wood front door should not take longer than a weekend.

Things You'll Need

• Two Saw Horses
• Masking Tape
• Paper
• Sand Paper and Sander
• Paint Brush
• Refinishing Stain
• Tools

Instructions

1. Remove wood front door from the hinges and place on two saw horses. Remove the hinges, the door knob, and any other hardware on the wood front door.

2. If your wood front door has glass, tape and cover the glass with masking tape and paper.

3. Sand the wood front door until the natural wood is visible. Make sure you sand the edges and both sides of the wood front door.

4. Take an air hose if you have it and remove the sawdust from the wood front door. If you don't have an air hose, use a broom to remove the sawdust from your wood front door.

5. Take a damp cloth and wash off the wood front door to remove every particle of sawdust.

6. Apply the stain in smooth even strokes on the wood front door. Take a dry rag to assist in applying the stain to the wood front door. Make sure the stain is even all around the door. Let one side dry completely before attempting to flip the wood front door over.

7. Apply a water treatment stain to the wood front door.

8. Finally, reinstall the hardware on the wood front door, and re-hang the wood front door.
