The first day of kindergarten is exciting for you and your child because he or she is beginning their formal schooling. You want to make sure the first day of kindergarten is enjoyable and stress free for your child.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

During the summer, tell your child he or she will be starting kindergarten. Talk about kindergarten in positive ways. Relate how much you enjoyed kindergarten when you were a child. Recall stories from your experience and share them.

  2. Step 2
Complete school registration before the first day of kindergarten

Make sure your child is registered for kindergarten by filling out the appropriate forms, paying fees on time, and submitting proof of vaccinations and doctor exams. Be sure to inform the school about any medical conditions your child may have. You do not want your child to be questioned about some missing paperwork on the first day of school.

  3. Step 3

Take your child to the school before the new school year begins. Ask the principal if you and your child can tour the school and perhaps look at the kindergarten classrooms. Sometimes schools offer orientation programs before school starts. Be sure to attend. Attending a kindergarten orientation is a great way to meet your child's teacher and principal; and offers your child a chance to meet his or her teacher and tour the school.

  4. Step 4
    School Supplies

Purchase all the required school supplies your child will need for kindergarten. It will be stressful for your child if he or she does not have the required school supplies.

  5. Step 5

Go with your child to the first day of Kindergarten. Prepare a nutritious breakfast before you take your child to school. Once at school, take pictures of your child outside the school and in front of the school' s marquee. Do all you can to make the first day of kindergarten a positive experience.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never ever talk about the school, the teachers, other parents, or other children in a negative way. Instilling a positive view of kindergarten will allow him or her to have a good experience throughout the school year.
  • Your child may cry when they join their kindergarten class for the first time. Console, but let go. You cannot go to kindergarten with your child.
