DSL modems are commonly used in homes and some businesses to access the Internet. A DSL modem is faster than a dial-up connection and typically uses Ethernet cables, instead of a phone line, to connect to the Internet. However, a modems will usually only be adequate enough to run one computer. For families or offices that run more than one computer, a second modem may be needed. Instead of installing a second, separate modem (which will cost more), the additional modems can be linked.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Router capable of accepting multiple DSL modems
  • Ethernet cables
  1. Step 1

Power down the computers and the DSL modems. Place the router in a location where it can be easily accessed.

  2. Step 2

Plug the DSL modems into the router. There will be multiple ports for this. It does not matter which port the DSL modems are plugged into, as long as they are designated modem ports. Using a second modem with the router will increase the Internet speed when multiple computers are being used (when only one computer is being used, it will run at the fastest single DSL modem speed).

  3. Step 3

Plug the Ethernet cables into the available ports on the modems. These ports will send the information from the DSL modems to the computers (via the Ethernet cables) when accessing the Internet. Attach the other end of the Ethernet cables into the Ethernet ports on the computers.

  4. Step 4

Power on the computers, then power on the router, followed by the DSL modems. It will take a moment, but the router will detect the DSL modems, and eventually the signal will be sent to the computers about the available DSL connection.
