Step 1
Disconnect your external hard drive from the computer, and power it off. Remove the AC power adapter from the power outlet.

Connect one end of the USB cable to your extrernal hard drive and the other end to an open USB port on your computer. Depending on your computer model, the USB ports could be on the back or front of your computer. If your external hard drive supports a firewire connection, connect one end of the firewire cable to the firewire port on your external hard drive and the other end to an open firewire port on your computer.

Plug the external hard drive's adapter into the AC Power and turn it on. The computer will automatically recognize the new external hard drive as a portable storage device, regardless of whether it's connected by a firewire or USB cable.

Double-click "My Computer" on the desktop. You should see your external hard drive's icon listed together with other removable drives on your computer.

Right-click your external hard drive's icon and click "Properties." Click the "Tools" button and click "Check Now" under "Error Checking." Place a check on the two options given and click "Start." The computer system will scan for and automatically fix the external hard drive errors that may have caused it to be deleted from the computer.

Step 6
Double-click your external hard drive's icon when the errors have been fixed to open and reveal the contents of the drive. Transfer files by copying and pasting them to and from your external hard drive.
