You don't like that wire fence around your back yard. You are annoyed with neighbors staring at you over the fence when you are cooking out or entertaining. It is time for a privacy fence. You do not, however, need a professional to rip out the wire fence and install a new privacy fence. Bamboo fencing is an excellent choice for a privacy fence. You can "go green" and add an attractive design element to your landscape. Bamboo is durable and relatively inexpensive. And you can install a bamboo privacy fence on an existing wire fence yourself without the expense of hiring a contractor.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Roll(s) of bamboo fencing
  • Measuring tape
  • Heavy-duty galvanized wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Pliers
  1. Step 1

Measure the length of the wire fence you wish to cover. Then determine the size and number of rolls of bamboo fencing you need. (Bamboo fencing that comes in rolls is much easier to install than panels.) The available lengths and heights tend to vary; however, the rolls generally come in 10-foot sections and are 5 to 8 feet tall.

  2. Step 2

Unroll the bamboo fencing and begin attaching at an end fence post by wrapping the bamboo around the post. Use 12-inch long pieces of heavy-duty galvanized wire to secure the bamboo fencing. (You can, of course, adjust the length of the wire to fit your fence.) Using the pliers to pull the wire through the bamboo fencing, attach the bamboo fencing at the top and the bottom of your existing wire fence. Twist the wire together at the back of the fence. Do this every 4 to 6 feet.

  3. Step 3

Attach the other end of the roll to the fence using the heavy-duty galvanized wire as in Step 1. Secure the bamboo fencing to the existing wire fence with wire about every 12 inches. Do this with each successive roll until you have finished covering your existing wire fence.

  4. Step 4

Connect the next roll of bamboo fencing to the previous roll using your heavy-duty galvanized wire. Secure the beginning of the second roll to the end of the first roll with wire spaced about every 12 inches. Do this which each successive roll until you have finished covering your wire fence.

  5. Step 5

When you reach the end of the fence, wrap the end of the roll around the ending fence post and secure it with the heavy-duty galvanized wire as you did at the beginning.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you need to cut the length of your bamboo fence, you can usually get the manufacturer or the home improvement store where you purchased your fencing to cut it to the desired length. Otherwise, you will need a bamboo saw to make clean cuts.
  • Do not place the bottom of your bamboo fencing directly on the ground. You need to leave some room (a few inches) to prevent the bamboo from rotting and decomposing due to soil moisture.
