Layer Your Hair by Cutting It Yourself

A friend of mine is a hairstylist and she recently told me a quick and easy way to layer hair without having to pay to have it done.

I love having my hair layered but times are tough and so is money. I decided to try it and I have to say, it turned out great. Not only did it give me a layered look that appeared natural, it got rid of my split ends.

Here are the steps that I took to give myself a nice layered look. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hair and keep it wet. It is easier to cut your hair when it is damp. Use conditioner if your hair is hard to comb through when it is wet.

    • 2

Bend over and brush your hair forward.

    • 3

Still leaning over with your hair brushed over your head, put it into a tight ponytail so that it is just above your forehead. Pull it tightly and brush it so that it is as straight as you can get it.

    • 4

Now that you have one binder around the ponytail and you've brushed it into a straight tail, take a sharp sissors and cut an inch off from the bottom. Try to keep it even and straight. Make sure that there isn't any hair pulled tightly. If you don't have it all pulled through then you will miss pieces and it won't look as good.

Take the binder out and check to see if the layers are short enough. If they are not or you want shorter layers, repeat this process and take off another inch or so. My hair was well below my shoulders (boy was I nervous)and I ended up doing this three times, so I took off about three inches. It looks nice and healthy because of the dry ends getting chopped off.

Tips & Warnings

  • After you cut your first layer, you can take it out of the ponytail, rebrush it, put it back in and check to see if the hair looks even. You might want to cut any small pieces that are longer. Make sure you have put your ponytail just above your forhead and have brushed it tightly.

  • If you think you did something wrong, you can visit your stylist. The wonderful thing about layering your hair, it doesn't have to be perfect. It is also easier to create a look when your hair is longer.
