How to Clean a Jeep Wrangler Hard Top

A hard top is a great accessory for a Jeep Wrangler that will be used year-round in a variety of climates. Wrangler hard tops are made of fiberglass, and feature a faux-leather pebbled finish that is attractive and durable. But like any automotive exterior, a hard top can get dirty and lose its showroom finish over time. Follow these steps to breathe some new life and looks into your Wrangler's hard top.

Things You'll Need

  • Car wash solution
  • Sponge
  • Bucket
  • Cotton towels
  • Car detail dressing
  • Wash the top as you would the rest of the vehicle. Spray the top thoroughly with a hose to remove any loose dirt and dust. Mix a car wash solution in a large bucket. Meguiar's NXT Generation Car Wash is an excellent all-purpose cleaner (see Resources). Mix it according to directions with warm water, then gently scrub the entire top with a sponge dipped into the solution. Rinse and repeat if necessary.

  • Dry the top with a soft clean cotton towel or an automotive chamois. Be sure that the material you use for drying doesn't have any dirt on it that can cause scratching of the surface.

  • Mix a 3:1 solution of Meguiar's Hyper Dressing (three parts water to one part dressing) and apply to the top with a damp sponge (see Resources). Work carefully to prevent the solution from getting on your windows. The Hyper Dressing will add a sheen to the finish of the top. For more sheen, increase the concentration to a 2:1 ratio.

  • Let the Hyper Dressing air-dry. When the surface is completely dry, buff lightly with a soft cotton cloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wash and detail your hardtop in the shade, out of direct sunlight. This prevents the car wash or dressing from drying too quickly.
