How to Make a Cascaron

A cascaron, or confetti egg, is an eggshell that has been emptied out, cleaned, filled with confetti, sparkles and glitter, and then decorated. Cascarones are commonly featured in many Hispanic-culture Easter events, but are often used for weddings, parties and other celebrations, as well. Traditionally, children break a cascaron on the head of a friend while making a wish. It is said that should the fragile eggshell break and shower the recipient with glitter and confetti, the wish will come true.
You can make these fun cascarones very easily, and it's a great craft to share with your kids, especially on a rainy day. If you wish, you can even have them make the confetti by cutting tissue paper or crepe paper into tiny pieces. The activity can be pretty messy, which should certainly serve to increase your child's interest in the project.

Things You'll Need

• Raw eggs
• Egg dye kit
• Confetti
• Sparkles
• Glitter
• Tissue paper
• Glue
• Paints (plus markers, stickers, glitter glue and other decorating materials)

Instructions

1. Spread several layers of old newspapers over a flat working surface. Gently tap the end of a raw egg with the handle of a butter knife to produce a tiny cracked area.

2. Pick away some of the cracked shell to create a small hole, about ½ inch in diameter. Empty the egg into a bowl.

3. Rinse the eggshell out thoroughly with warm water. Shake out any excess and allow the shell to dry completely.

4. Use the egg dye kit to color the eggshells, and allow them to dry thoroughly.

5. Fill the eggshells with confetti, sparkles and glitter. Cut little pieces of tissue paper and glue them over the holes in the shells. Decorate your festive cascarones with paints, markers, stickers, glitter glue and any other materials that please you.
