The iPod is meant to be a mirror of whatever is in your iTunes library. If you have three hundred songs in your library, those songs will be on your iPod, and if you delete them from your iTunes and reconnect your iPod, your songs will be erased. The same goes for videos; but with this fix, you will be able to easily get around that.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Plug your iPod into your computer using the USB cable. If iTunes doesn't open by itself, go ahead and open it.

  2. Step 2

In iTunes, click on your iPod in the Devices section. This will bring up a summary of your iPod properties. To manually manage your music, make sure to check the Manually Manage Music and Videos button.

  3. Step 3

Now you can drag the music that you want from your iTunes library and drop it into your iPod. You just put on the music that you want. To remove the songs, just right click on the song under the iPod library and delete it. This will only remove it from your iPod, not your library.

  4. Step 4

Once the song is on your iPod, you can delete the music file from your hard disk. This allows you to free up disk space on your hard drive, if you are working with a limited amount of memory.

Tips & Warnings
  • These steps work the same with video files. Once they are on the iPod, they can be deleted from your hard drive.
  • It is harder to get music off of your iPod and back onto your hard drive. Having your files backed up is always recommended. Do not delete the songs off your hard drive if they are not something that you can get back.
