How to Glue Acrylic Sheets

Acrylic sheeting is versatile material. Acrylic is a type of shatterproof, lightweight plastic often used to make containers, display boxes as well as other storage solutions. Acrylic sheets have even been used to construct housings for various electronic devices. Acrylic sheets come in a variety of colors and transparencies, but the most common type looks like glass and often replaces glass in applications where shatterproof properties are desired. Gluing acrylic requires some simple preparation and an acrylic-specific cement.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the edges to be glued. The edges to be glued must be perfectly flat so as to maximize the bond when gluing.

    • 2

Tape the acrylic sheets into the positions you would like to glue them into. Use only a few pieces of tape to hold each piece together; allow space to apply the cement.

    • 3

Run a bead of acrylic cement along each seam. Acrylic cement is a self-wicking liquid, so once you run the bead along the seam, the cement will run between the pieces.

    • 4

Allow the project to cure for 24-48 hours before removing the tape and using the object.
