You just walked out of the grocery store spending more money than you wanted to. You tell yourself every time you visit the grocery store that you will only purchase the food items you need at home. The only thing is you’re not sure how to approach your grocery shopping so you spend less money. There is a way to keep your grocery shopping expense down.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • notepad
  • grocery store ads
  • grocery coupons
  1. Step 1

Create a grocery shopping list. Look through your refrigerator and pantry to see what food items you still have. This will help you avoid buying an item you already have at home and don‘t need to spend money on. Write down the items you see you need and only purchase those items on the grocery list.

  2. Step 2

Look at the grocery weekly ads. Highlight the items on sale that are on your grocery list. If your grocery store price matches competitor ads then highlight the items on the competitor ads and take them with you to show the cashier.

  3. Step 3

Search for grocery coupons you may have saved and see if there are any for the items that are on sale and actually need. Do not buy an item simply because there is a coupon for it.

  4. Step 4

Before you reach for the item on the shelf compare the price per ounce for the food product you are going to buy. This can be found on the shelf tag. Choose the lower cost per ounce.

  5. Step 5

Buy grocery store brands. Store brands are lower priced than name brand labels.

  6. Step 6

Eat at home before shopping. Do not go grocery shopping on an empty stomach because this will cause you to purchase more food.
