A good quality set of hand pruners, known as "secateurs" in some parts of the world, can make your gardening tasks far more enjoyable than inexpensive tools. Cheap secateurs may last a season or two, but good quality ones may last a decade or longer. It is inevitable that your set of secateurs will need sharpening at some point.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fine sharpening stone (found at garden supply stores or a hardware store)
  • General purpose lubricating oil
  • Rag
  1. Step 1

Apply a few drops of lubricating oil to the surface of the sharpening stone.

  2. Step 2

Hold the sharpening stone flat against the secateurs blades and drag each blade along the sharpening stone a few times. It may be easier to move the stone, rather than the blade. Either method is fine.

  3. Step 3

Apply more lubricating oil to a rag. Use the oily rag to wipe down the blades of the secateurs before storing.
