Having a menu on your DVD marks your video as having a measure of professionalism. If you want to make and edit your own DVD menus, one of the best and simplest ways to do it is through Adobe Photoshop. The resulting file can then be imported into any of several different programs, such as DVD Studio Pro, to be added to the video.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open Photoshop and then open a new document. Make the size of the document 720 pixels x 540 pixels and make the resolution 72. Use the "Fill" tool to fill the canvas with black.

  2. Step 2

Use the "Text" tool to put in the main title of the movie. To create clickable menu icons, first change the "Foreground" color to one you like. Use the "Rectangular" shape tool to draw out the shape of the first control icon. Click on the "FX" icon and add a "Bevel and Emboss" to the shape. Use the same technique to make any other control icons. In a layer above each icon, type in the name.

  3. Step 3

Hold down the "CTRL" key and select each of the text layers. Go to "Layers" and click "Rasterize Type." Select each separately and go to "Layer," then "Layer Style" and click "Create Layer." This separates the layer into two. Select both. At the bottom of the layer panel click on the "Link" button. Pressing the "Shift" key, select both layers. Then go to "Layers" in the menu and select "Merge Layers." Link and merge this layer with the corresponding DVD icon below it. Do this for all the icons, naming each for their function, such as "Rewind" or "Stop".

  4. Step 4

Right-click each layer and make two copies by clicking "Duplicate." Name the top one "default," the middle one "selected" and the bottom one "active." These will provide the three possible states for each icon. Do this for all the icons. Hold down the "CTRL" key and select all the layers. Go to "Edit," then "Adjustments" and click "Hue/Saturation." Use the hue and saturation sliders to change the color of the selected icons. Do the same for the active layers.

  5. Step 5

Group your layers by icon. Create a new blank layer between each group. Click on "Image" and then "Image Size." In the dialog that opens, reduce the width to 480 pixels. Save your menu as a PSD file.
