How to Paint Steam Radiators
Old steam radiators are often still fully functional, but are beginning to show outward signs of their age. They may not look as nice as they once did, but that can be fixed with just a little work that can be performed by any homeowner. A fresh coat of paint will brighten them up and can even be used as a decorating option for the home. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Sandpaper
- Scraper
- Chemical paint remover
- Metal primer for paint
- Oil based enamel paint
- Hot dog roller and/or radiator paint brush (available at paint stores)

Remove all the old paint from the surface of the radiator by first using the scraper to take off any loose or peeling paint.

Sand the radiator to remove more of the paint and smooth the surface.

Use a chemical paint remover to get off any of the stubborn paint left.

Use the hot dog roller or radiator paint brush to apply a coat of bare metal primer to the radiator. Allow it to dry overnight.

Finish by applying a coat of oil-based enamel paint (a high-temperature paint is not necessary) in the color of your choice to the radiator. Allow it to dry overnight and add another coat if necessary.
