A pressure washer usually represents a substantial financial investment, so it pays to keep it properly maintained. Regular maintenance such as properly cleaning the unit will keep it performing well and extend its life. The process of cleaning a pressure washer is not an obvious one, so some instruction is helpful.

From Quick Guide: Pressure Washer Basics
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remove the screens from the washer's pump and clean out any debris by hand. Wash them in a warm water and dish soap solution. Use a solvent to remove oil or grease on the screens. Rinse thoroughly and reattach the screens.

  2. Step 2

Remove the nozzles from the washer. Use compressed air to blast out any debris or dirt from inside the nozzle. Wash the nozzles in warm water and dish soap, rinse and reattach.

  3. Step 3

Make a solution of 1/4 cup bleach and 1 gallon of warm water. Add this solution to the tank, then move the washer back and forth to slosh around the water in the tank. Run the solution through the machine to clean the hoses and/or lines.

  4. Step 4

Use a mild soap and water solution to clean the exterior of the pressure washer.
