How to Make a Homemade PVC Laundry Basket Rack

Laundry baskets are essential for doing laundry, either at home or at the laundromat. A PVC laundry basket rack can be made at home, saving money over pre-formed, store-bought brands. In addition, the basket contains a net bag that can be removed and washed with the clothes to remove any residual dirt and odors. Finally, the rack can provide a place to hang up clothes when they come out of the dryer while the folded clothes go back in the basket. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Attach four of the three-way connectors to four pieces of PVC pipe, two lengths of 24 inches and two lengths of 36 inches. This will form the base of the basket. You should now have a rectangular base with four connections pointing upward.

    • 2

Attach all four pieces of 16-inch-long PVC pipe to the connectors sticking up from the base. These will form the sidwalls of the basket.

    • 3

Attach the last four three-way connectors to the sidewalls sticking up from the base, with the open ends facing each other. Insert two 36-inch lengths of pipe into the two connectors along the top length of the basket. This will complete two walls of the basket.

    • 4

Attach two pieces of 11.75-inch PVC pipe to two sides of a T connector, leaving the bottom of the T open. Insert these pieces into one end of the top rim of the basket, with the open portion of the T connector pointing upward. Insert a 56-inch piece of PVC pipe into the T connector pointing upward. This will form one side wall of the laundry basket and one support post for the rack. Repeat this step for the opposite side of the basket.

    • 5

Attach the two elbow connectors to the upright support beams, facing each other. Insert the final 36-inch length of PVC pipe to complete the rack. Insert the large mesh laundry bag and attach with zip ties for a more permanent construction or use PVC snap clamps for a easily removable bag.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use PVC glue to ensure solid connections that won't come apart. Allow 15 seconds for the glue to set, 20 minutes before applying any weight to the project. Smaller diameter pipe can be used if minimal weight is to be placed on the rack.

  • Always make sure to have proper ventilation when using PVC glue on any project.
